On December 7, 2014, the Deer Valley Pop Warner Toros became national champions. On December 7 the year before, they had been done playing football months before after winning only one regular season game. What did Coach Steve Short do differently? Two answers: A. nothing B. focused on his defense and brought Authority Football in to help develop his players and coaches on the defensive side of the ball.

I say “nothing” because as far as running his program, he changed nothing, but stayed true to the philosophy and strategy of program and player development that began with. Coach Short knows that building and maintaining a program is a process.

As for defense, he knew his players wouldn’t be successful if they were porous on defense or soft as a team. So he partnered with a very good coach and two of his staff from another team who joined the Toros and took over the offense, and that allowed Coach Short to focus his time on defense, and that’s where Authority Football comes in.

We believe in our systems and methodology, and wanted to prove they work not only at the college and high school level, but at the youth level as well, so we volunteered to join the Toros staff to prove our point.

Two-days per week since August 1, we provided speed development, defensive line coaching, line backer coaching, game planning, film analysis, and coach mentorship. Through a philosophy focused on execution and development, rather than just winning, the Toros won the conference, then state, then west coast championships, and finally ended their 21-week season with a western state national championship, shutting out their opponents in both the state and national championship.

Coach Harvey and I are both extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with the Toros and the coaching staff. The Toros program is easily one of the most well-run football programs I’ve seen at any level, regardless of their record.

The product of our experiment this season is a ready-to-install system with all of the coaching, systems, terminology, diagrams, drill and game film, installation and practice schedules, and coaching secrets that helped the Toros become champions.

The product will be available in January 2015, and any interested coaches or parents can contact us for information about it or our team training or consulting services.
